Using our bodies is an essential part of good health. Regular daily exercise is a vital part of staying well, indeed muscles, joints and bones need exercise to ensure circulation of blood through them and the stimulus to lay down new muscle, connective tissue and bone. Disuse will result in thinning bones, weak muscles and connective tissue. Indeed this limits the time astronauts can spend in space - they suffer acute osteoporosis! However any exercise will result in mild damage to joints and muscles so we need the raw materials for healing and repair together with rest and sleep to allow such healing and repair to take place.
