Macular degeneration - success with vitamins and minerals
[UPDATED DECEMBER 2022]
Case Study
EFFECTS OF THE INTRAVEOUS USE OF ZINC, SELENIUM AND OTHER ANTI-OXIDANTS IN PRERETINAL MACULAR FIBROSIS
An 80 year old, white Caucasian male with the complaint of blurry vision, of six months duration in his right eye, was diagnosed to have preretinal macular fibrosis. He was seen by two renal specialists. This diagnosis was confirmed by fundus photography and fluorescein retinal angiography.
On eye examination prior to treatment, his vision was 20/70-3 in the right eye and 20/30+2 in the left eye with his glasses. On the Amsler chart he had distortion of the lines, greyness and blurring in his right eye.
He was treated with intravenous zinc, selenium, multiple vitamins and vitamin B complex. After 10 intravenous treatments six weeks later his vision was 20/50+3 in the right eye and 20/30+2 in the left eye. The Amsler grid had a thin, slightly wavy line, was not as greyish, and there was a disappearance of blurring. He was able to read words on a road sign.
On continuation of his maintenance treatment, he continued to notice improvement in reading the Amsler grid lines, and disappearance of the grey colour. Moreover, he noticed a remarkable improvement in his night vision and he is able to drive.
On fundus examination there was no noticeable anatomical improvement for two years. He was found to have improvement after two years and has remained stable for the last two years.
In conclusion, parenteral use of zinc, selenium and other antioxidants given initially, followed by transdermal maintenance treatment with mineral gel, has been found effective in the treatment of preretinal macular fibrosis.
